D. ADAMS FLETCHER
MAQUOKETA

D. Adams Fletcher was born in New York, in 1831, to Adams and Sylvia (Sheldon) Fletcher, the former a native of Vermont and the latter of New York. His father, who lived and died in his native state, was a carriage maker by trade. After his death the mother came to Iowa, where she lived until her death.

Our subject was educated at an academy in New York, where he was fitted for college. He then entered the University of Vermont, from which institution he graduated in 1852, and after his graduation was elected a member of the O. B. K. Society, which is an honor conferred only upon graduates of the highest standing. For two years, after receiving his degree from the last named institution, he was principal of an academy in Tennessee. He then commenced the study of law in the office of P. E. Havens, at Essex, N. Y., and in the spring of 1856 was admitted to the bar at the last named place.

Deciding that the west was the best placed for a young lawyer, Mr. Fletcher at once removed to Iowa and located at Maquoketa, where he practiced for five years, when he was elected principal of the Maquoketa high school. For ten years he served in that capacity, and during this tie was twice elected county superintendent of schools. In 1872 he resumed the practice of law and for five years, until 1877, was associated with Mr. F. Amos. Since 1877 Mr. Fletcher has been alone, and during his long and honorable career at the bar has enjoyed the respect and esteem of his professional brethren and of the community in which he lives. He has been prominently identified with many important cases during the last twenty-three years, and has become well known as a conscientious, broad-minded and skillful practitioner, and one who has always the best interests of his clients before him.

Mr. Fletcher was married, in 1855, near Winchester, Tenn., to Miss Martha Magee, and they have four children, three sons and one daughter: Henry J. is a prominent attorney at Minneapolis, Minn.; D. A. is an organist at Minneapolis and Charles is at home. The daughter, Minnie B., married Rev. Samuel Shepherd, pastor of the Congregational church at Maquoketa.
