Maquoketa Excelsior
March 21, 1872

-The Omaha Tribune and Republican, of March 18th, speaking of a former citizen of Maquoketa, son of Mr. I. R. Millard, makes some remarks that must be very flattering to the old people that watched over his youth and trained him in the way he should go:

“It gives us unqualified pleasure to announce that our popular and so highly respected fellow citizen, Joseph H. Millard, has received the appointment of Government Director of the Union Pacific railroad.

“Mr. Millard is to every sense a gentleman, of the highest integrity, large business ability, a successful banker, ranking among our very first citizens and business men, and held in universal esteem.

“His numerous friends, the City of Omaha, the State of Nebraska, the nation, and the Union Pacific itself, may all congratulate themselves on this most excellent appointment.”

Mr. Millard succeeds Hon. B. F. Wade in one of the highest and most responsible position in the State, and we see that both political parties are pleased with the appointment, so much confidence have they in the capacity and integrity of the man.
