Joseph Sankey (1850 (27 October), Age: 29, Was born in 1822 in Mahoning, Lawrence, Pennsylvania, William Sankey, Joseph’s father, relocated his family to
New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. Prior to 1850 Joseph and his wife Margaret Crawford, age 19, removed to Perry, Jackson County, Iowa. By 1860. the family had grown to include: John Sankey 9, Scott Sankey 7, Crawford Sankey 6, Jos Sankey 3, and
Chas P Sankey. According to Obituaries published in the Walnut Bureau, the family moved to Walnut Iowa in 1873. The 1880 Walnut Census (Joseph died in 1881) lists
Joseph Sankey 59, Margaret Sankey 42, Scott Sankey 24, Joseph Sankey 21. Frank Sankey 19, Lee Sankey 15, Mattie Sankey 13, William Sankey 10, Lottie M. Sankey 6.
Joseph purchased a farm near Walnut, but shortly there after established the Central House hotel. The oldest son John had married and gone in to the livery business. In 1880 John and his wife, Arabella Ward had one daughter, Maud and Arabella’s mother Mary Jane Hildreth Ward Boomer was living with them.
