Purinton, Francis R: Merchant; born Boone, Iowa, August 15, 1895; son of Calvin C Purinton-Emma Roberts; education Boone High School 1912, graduate work 1 year in comml; married Miriam Healy, February 2, 1937, Wheatland Illinois; 1913-16 steno C&NW RR off, Chicago, Illinois; 1920 homesteaded, Douglas Wyoming; 1920-24 store manager for Black & Hansen, Maquoketa; 1924- owner & operator F R Purinton 5c to $1.00 Store, Maquoketa; Jackson County Soldiers Relief Commission, chairman 1926-38; member civic com which helped State secure Maquoketa caves & have them established as state park; assisted in securing Maquoketa Junior College; during World War enlisted Camp Dodge June 1916, Company 1 2nd Iowa infantry, Brownsville Texas, returned to Iowa & formed 1st separate Company of Iowa infantry, August 1917, Camp Cody N M, assigned to 129th machine gun batt 34th division, October 1917 commander 2nd lieutenant, machine gun instr, O/S September 1918 France, machine gun school October 1918, assigned to 110 MG batt, 29th division, May 1919, returned to US, discharged Camp Dix N J, June 3, 1919; American Legion post 75, has filled every office, chair member Boone Post, comm. Maquoketa post 1923, district adjt 2nd district, 1931-33, district comm. 1934-35, only 2nd district comm. Who has led conv parade by winning state membership contest; 1939- chef de Gare & grand cheminot passé 40 & 8; state chairman Sons of American Legion; Commercial Club, secretary 1927-28 & 1932-33, president 1934, secretary since 1939; ARC; Jackson County Road Improvement Association, secretary 1927, helped obtain $1,000,000 road bond appropriation; Interstate Merchants Council; Ben Franklin League of Retail Merchants; E Iowa Motor Club; Izaak Walton; Farm Bureau; Country & Golf Club; OES; AF&AM; Scottish Rite; hobby: civic activities; office 137 S Main; residence 211 Austin Ave, Maquoketa.
