BATTLES, OTTO V.: Purebred livestock breeder and exhibitor; born Maquoketa, Iowa, July 21, 1882; son of Samuel Battles-Laura Phillips; educated high school; married Evangeline Sokol, June 12, 1909, Maquoketa; 1904- since father's death breeder & exhibitor of Aberdeen-Angus cattle, operator of Rosemere Farms, the Rosemere herd probably recognized as most outstanding herd of the breed in the world, has won many 1st prizes and championships in great shows of U.S. and Canada, at the Chicago International has won more prizes than any other herd of any breed in the world; has exhibited the herd at every important show of the North American continent & has held many public auctions at which cattle have been sold for record prices, the Congdon and Battles dispersal sale at Rosemere Farm June 1938 broke the records for all time, considering number sold; sold highest priced Aberdeen-Angus bull ever to sell for cash, was Epponian 8th of Rosemere grand champion of 1936 International Show Chicago, Illinois; only American called to Great Britain to judge Aberdeen-Angus cattle; has judged at greatest show at Perth Scotland 1929, only person from U.S. to be called to Argentina to judge, also judged at Buenas Aires Aug. 1940; writer for magazines & trade journals of N & S America & England, became well known in all of these countries; American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders Ass'n, past president two terms, 1916- director; Saddle & Sirloin Club of Chicago, portrait hung in gallery of fame at this club, Chicago, Ill; Yakima Wash. Country Club; AF & AM; Scottish Rite 18 degree; hobbies: horses, polo, horseback riding; resident of Park Avenue, Yakima, Washington.
