Florence Schuerer, 91

Funeral service for Florence L. Schuerer, 91, Amana, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana. She died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Church elder Emilie Hoppe officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Amana Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.

Florence Louise Schuerer was born Feb. 23, 1923, in Middle Amana, the daughter of Carl F. and Louise Hegewald Rettig. She graduated from Amana High School in 1941 and attended the Cedar Rapids Business College for two years.

She enjoyed people and looked forward to her many jobs over the years. Prior to her marriage, she worked at the Amana main office, the Amana Meat Market and the general store.

She married Walter Schuerer Jan. 30, 1946, in Davenport. In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker, she worked at the Colony Inn from 1945 to 1990 and at the Brick Haus Restaurant, alongside her husband, daughter and son-in-law from 1990 to 2010.

She enjoyed cooking, baking pies and gardening. She had fun dyeing Easter eggs every year and “giving them away!” She and her husband traveled to Japan, South America, Austria and Germany. She especially cherished her family, grandchildren and her dogs and the time she spent with them.

Schuerer is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons, Ronald (Linda), East Amana, and Gerald (Fay), Amana; one daughter, Madeline Schulte, Amana; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four nephews; one niece and two beloved dogs, Kyla and Josie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John C. Rettig, and one son-in-law, Keith “Skeeter” Schulte.
