Harold E. Eckman, 87, Amana, died Monday evening, Jan. 6, 2014, at his home at Lake View Village, Amana. There will be no services at this time.

Memorials may be made to Safe Haven of Iowa County.

Harold Eugene Eckman was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Marshalltown, the son of Realand and Eleanor Waddell Eckman. Following his education in the Marshalltown schools, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He and Lucille Krauss were married and made their home in Cedar Rapids. He was employed for many years as a maintenance supervisor at the Eastern Iowa Airport, Cedar Rapids. He retired in 1988. The couple lived in Amana for the last 27 years.

He enjoyed motorcycle riding and was an avid airplane fan. He enjoyed flying and overhauled and flew a bi-plane.

He was a member of the Masons and Shriners and the Experimental Aircraft Association in earlier years. In his free time, he liked to garden and work with stained glass, making Tiffany style lamps.

Eckman is survived by his son, David (Marina) Eckman, Amana; a grandson, Greg Eckman, Amana; three great-grandchildren, Melanie and Nichole Eckman and Talli Krueger, and three great-great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Kaylee and Arya.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and a brother, Richard.
