Funeral services for Doris M. Rettig, 93, Middle Amana, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Middle Amana Church. She died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Burial was in the Middle Amana Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Amana Chaurch Society, the Amana Heritage Society or the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Clinic at the University of Iowa Foundation.

Doris Marie Rettig was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Amana, the daughter of Henry W. and Minnie (Zuber) Graichen. She graduated from Amana High School in 1937 and continued her education at Cedar Rapids Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Amana Society from 1938 until she married John C. Rettig Feb. 3, 1945.

She accompanied him to Laurel, Md., and later to Albany, Ore., where he was stationed in the Army. During that time, she was employed as a bookkeeper in the finance office at the Army bases.

Upon his discharge from the Army, they returned to Middle, which became their home for the remainder of their lives. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at Amana Refrigeration but is perhaps best remembered for the many years (1962-1990) she served as secretary and bookkeeper for the Amana Community School.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, needlepoint, dining out and traveling. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, oma and sister who was greatly loved.

She was a lifelong resident of the Amana Colonies and a member of the Amana Church Society and the Amana Heritage Society.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all of her caregivers at Mercy Medical Center and Colonial Manor in Amana.

Rettig is survived by two sons, Mark and Diana Rettig, Cedar Rapids, and David and Mary Lynn Rettig, Middle; one granddaughter, Stephanie, Cedar Rapids, and one sister-in-law, Florence and Walter Schuerer, Amana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2008; her parents and one sister, Helen June Graichen.
