Fritz Marz, 87

Funeral services for Fritz R. Marz, 87, Homestead, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Middle Amana Community Church. He died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Colonial Manor of Amana.

Church elder Alan Trumpold officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Homestead Cemetery with military honors.

A memorial fund has been established.

Fritz Rudolph Marz was born March 24, 1925, in Homestead, the son of John Jacob and Henriette Kolb Marz. He served in the U.S. Army for three years, from 1943 to 1946, stationed in the China, Burma and India Theatre.

He returned to Amana and graduated from Amana High School in 1947.

He married Ellen May Leichsenring Sept. 12, 1948, in a Homestead garden wedding. He was employed with the Amana Society Telephone Departments, the South Amana Bakery and in November of 1955, went to work with Amana Refrigeration until retiring 35 years later.

He was a member of the Homestead Volunteer Fire Department for many years and also the Homestead Welfare Club. He also managed the Amana Cemeteries for 42 years.

He enjoyed photography and spent many hours in his woodworking shop.

The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the entire staff of Colonial Manor for their wonderful support over the past three and a half years.

Marz is survived by his wife, Ellen May; one son, Gene and Deb Marz, Cedar Rapids; one daughter Geri Marz and Lu Zoller, Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Corey and Bryce Urbanek, Kearney, Neb., and Jake Marz, Brooklyn, N.Y., and one brother, Louis and Caroline Marz, Homestead.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Dittrich.
