Duane Charles Papesh, 84, of Belle Plaine, IA passed away November 5, 2025 at Northbrook Manor, Cedar Rapids; after a short illness.

Duane was born April 10, 1941 to Charles and Daisy (Jacobi) Papesh at the Corn Belt Hospital, Belle Plaine. Growing up on the family farm in rural Belle Plaine, Duane graduated from Belle Plaine High School, class of 1961. He enlisted into the U.S Navy. Upon his return from service, Duane worked the family farm with his father. He also worked for the railroad before spending many years at Pierce Lumber, Belle Plaine. On August 30, 1975, Duane married Viginia Van Scoyoc at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, IA.

Duane was a skilled bowler, and enjoyed playing cards (Pepper) with family and friends. He followed sports as a Celtics and Colts fan. Later in life he was an avid reader and took an interest to learning history. Most of all Duane had a love for family; especially his grandchildren; attending their events whenever he could.

Duane was a people person, showing kindness and spreading happiness to those around him. He had a positive outlook on life and would bring a smile to your face with his big laugh.

Duane was a member of the Belle Plaine Odd Fellows and American Legion.

He is survived by his son, Damian (Abby) Papesh of Swisher; daughter, Amanda Barnell of North English; grandchildren, Emma, Megan, Max, Jordan, Jacob and Jaxon; siblings, Dean (Liz) Papesh of Hartwick, Diane (Alan) Lindsey of Garrison, along with many loving family and friends.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia (1993); and son, Mathew (1976).

Celebration of life will be 1-4 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2025 at the Belle Plaine American Legion. Burial will take place at Winslow Cemetery, Poweshiek County, IA at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences can be sent to www.neuhausfuneralservice.com.
