In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Virginia’s name and made out to Jarold Greene to be used for Missions at their children’s churches. Virginia Mae Greene, the daughter of Walter and Eleanor (Price) Schlesselman, was born on May 17, 1938 on the family farm northeast of Deep River. She graduated from Deep River High School with the class of 1956. On June 24, 1956, Virginia was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Jarold Greene. To this union six children were born, Bryan, Janietta, Carmela, Rhonda, Brant and Erin.

In early 1962, Virginia and Jarold received salvation while attending a revival meeting and were later baptized by immersion in a farm pond north of Deep River. They waded out with the preacher, who got stuck and needed help to get out of the mud.

In addition to a fulltime mother and housewife, she sold Avon and worked as a sales clerk at the Ben Franklin Store in Grinnell, cashier at Star Inn, Guernsey and as City Clerk of Deep River. Virginia enjoyed baking, sewing clothes, embroidering and collecting antiques. She also attended many of her children’s and grandchildren’s various ball games, school and church programs. Virginia enjoyed going to antique auctions, flea markets and traveling with her husband in their retirement years. While traveling, she could never pass an antique store without stopping to look for items to add to her collection. A memorable trip was to Niagara Falls, where on the Maiden of the Mist Cruise, her purse was completely soaked and filled with water from the falls. Another trip was the World’s Largest Garage Sale (675 miles) from Alabama through Ohio. She was also known for collecting rocks (from National Parks) from various trips. Once she had some rocks packed in her luggage, which raised a few questions from the security screener at the airport in Seattle. The screener finally said, “Just don’t get mad at anyone.”

Virginia’s legacy will be cherished by her husband of 68 years Jarold of Deep River; her children, Bryan (Mary) Greene of North English, Janietta (Steve) Criswell of Montezuma, Carmela (Mike) Tarvin of Bondurant, Rhonda (Bill) Blomme of Parnell, Brant (Laura) Greene of Williamsburg and Erin (Dustin) Darrah of Kellogg; 14 grandchildren, Jason (Chrystal) Greene, Scott (Janelle) Greene, Janelle (Jay) Watkins, Adam (Jamie) Criswell, Jared (Rebecca) Criswell, Jacy (Adam) Porter, Blake (Hannah) Tarvin, Tifanie Blomme, Tanner (Caitlin) Blomme, Derek Greene, Elizabeth Greene, Jeremiah Greene, Brylee Darrah and Nash Darrah; 23 great grandchildren with one on the way along with one brother, Jack (Judy) Schlesselman of Belle Plaine and one sister-in-law, Frances Elliott

She is forever in our hearts and will be missed by many. We take comfort in the fact that she is present with our Lord.
