Surrounded by his loving family, Eugene “Gene” William Womochil, Sr, 87, of Vinton, passed away at his home on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 30, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, with Chaplain Brian Reeves officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, November 29 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Gene was born May 23, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Albin and Ruth (Sova) Womochil. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1955. On April 11, 1959, Gene married the love of his life, Ann Mareda. He was employed as a supervisor for Rath Packing Company as well as sharing farm life with Ann.

Gene had many interests, but his most enjoyable times were those spent farming, football, growing/selling sweetcorn, and spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish Gene’s memory are his wife of 65 years, Ann of Mt. Auburn; children: Ron (Nycki) Mareda of Independence, MO, Connye (Rick) Frye of Mt. Auburn, Debbie Brecht (Dave Wiebold) of Parnell, and Jim Womochil (Kellie Voss) of Vinton; twelve grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren with two on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Eugene William Womochil, Jr; sister, Beverly Kreigel; and numerous other family members.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to a scholarship fund for Vinton Shellsburg students to be established in Gene’s name.

Gene’s family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Croix Hospice, Cornerstone Caregiving, and the Visiting Angels for their care of Gene.
