Richard (Dick) L. Faas, 93, of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully Friday, September 13, 2024. On September 26, 1930 near Millersburg, Iowa, Richard was the third child of seven, born to Floyd and Irene (Hinrichs) Faas.
Dick graduated from Millersburg High School in 1948 and went on to Iowa State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in science and wildlife management. After serving in the U.S. Army during the latter part of the Korean conflict, Dick attended UNI to earn his teaching credentials, pursuing his passion for science. He eventually earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa and became a lifelong Hawkeye fan. While attending UNI, Dick met and married his bride of 67 years, Doris Esther Lingo from Marengo, Iowa. Together they raised their children, Dave and Dawn.
Richard began his teaching career at Lowden Consolidated School from 1956-62. He spent the next 27 years teaching Jr. High Science at College Community Schools along with being actively involved in coordinating Prairie’s outdoor education program. Dick’s love for learning was contagious, not only for his students, but with his many nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren.
Preceding Dick in death were his parents, sisters Phyllis Bauer, Marilyn Pruess, Ruth Ann Gorsh and brothers Robert and Donald. Living relatives include wife Doris, son David of Marion, and daughter Dawn (Spring) of Eldridge, Iowa. Three grandchildren, Dr. Ashlyn Spring (Dr. Josh Fletcher), Jac Logan Spring (Azra), and USAF Captain Eli Spring (Kim). Great grandchild, Richard Michael “Ry” Fletcher, Anja and Arija Spring. Sibling Rev. Esther Dant and sister-in-law Elaine Faas.
Being a couple of strong faith, Dick and Doris have been active members of Concordia Lutheran Church for over 62 years. In addition, Dick enjoyed gardening, becoming a lifetime Master Gardener, inviting groups of enthusiasts to enjoy his acreage of wildflowers and prairie grasses. Fishing, mushrooming, card playing, oil painting, and traveling were some of Dick’s favorite hobbies, especially when they included time with friends, family, and the grandkids.
