Leroy “Lee” D. Slaymaker, age 81, of Marengo, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 10, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Tim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo with Military Honors conducted by the Marengo American Legion Post #76. Visitation: 4-7 p.m., Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

Lee is survived by his loving wife Suni of Marengo; a daughter Sarah Slaymaker of Williamsburg; granddaughter Autumn Dhondt of Williamsburg; siblings Don (Shirley) Slaymaker of Marengo, Steve (Jan) Slaymaker of Conroy, and Alice (Dick) Rohrer of Hartwick; sisters-in-law Kwiye Pak and Candy Takeuchi; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Sam and Clem and a sister Linda Kanke.

Leroy Dean Slaymaker was born April 6, 1943, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Ray and Violet Zigler Slaymaker. He graduated from Iowa Valley High School in 1961, then went on to major in Horticulture at Iowa State University. Lee joined the U.S. Army and Peace Corps and was stationed in Panama and Korea. He was united in marriage to Suni Pak on August 28, 1971, in Marengo.

Lee worked as a park ranger in Central City and taught English and Horticulture at Kirkwood Community College. He purchased Rosa’s Flower Shop in Marengo operating it over 30 years, retiring after that. Lee loved crossword puzzles, watching home improvement and animal shows, and SpongeBob with his granddaughter Autumn. In his earlier years, Lee enjoyed going dancing with Suni, and later in life he especially enjoyed his nap time.
