John F. O’Connor, 77, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at The University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation: 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the funeral home. A livestream of the memorial service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for John, under “photos and videos,” starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

John was born August 14, 1946, in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Reynold J. “Bud” and Frances (Kehoe) O’Connor. He graduated from Coggon High School in 1964. John also attended Kirkwood Community College, Loras College and the University of Iowa. On May 20, 1978, John was united in marriage to Carolyn Riser in Cedar Rapids.

He worked for FMC and Universal Engineering before retiring in 2017. John was a very active 45-year member of the Elks Lodge #251 in Cedar Rapids where he and Carolyn hosted the Special Needs Prom Dance for 36 years which has been named in their honor. John was a giving man that was always there to lend a helping hand to friends and relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn O’Connor of Cedar Rapids; children, Lynell O’Connor (Terry Hakeman) of Williamsburg, Iowa, Gina O’Connor, Nathan O’Connor, and stepson, Mark A. Kelly, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Amber (Tyler) Mongin of Cedar Rapids, and Cadyn O’Connor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; brothers, Jim O’Connor of Center Point, Iowa, and Kevin O’Connor of Cambridge, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Reynold “Bud” and Frances O’Connor; and sister, Margaret “Maggie” O’Connor.
