George L. Andrews, 82, of Central City, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. To honor George’s wishes he will be cremated. A private service will be planned at a future date. Friends may call at the Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City on Friday, February 27, 2009 between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Claire and Lola Andrews; his son, Mark; and his nephew, Zachary.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Erma (Votroubek) Andrews; brother, James (Pat) Andrews; children, Diana (Jim) Cook, Alan (Susan) Andrews, Neil (Vicky) Andrews; grandchildren, Chace (Annette) Kisling, Sarah Andrews (Robert Dunn III), Jason (Emily) Andrews, Aaron Andrews, Candice Andrews; sister-in-law, Shirley Votroubek; nephews, Leland (Denise) Votroubek, John (Maryanne) Andrews; niece, Abby (Tim) Clark; great-grandchildren, Brayden Kisling, Caleb and Carter Andrews, and Robert “Bobby” Dunn IV.

George served proudly in the United States Navy, in the Pacific Theater, aboard the attack transport the U.S.S. Florence Nightingale. He was a member of the American Legion Wapsie Post 421, in Central City, Iowa.

George retired from the Iowa Electric Light and Power Company at the Prairie Creek Power Station after 33 years of service as Assistant Chief Engineer. George instilled a love and respect of nature in his children. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice, as well as numerous friends and neighbors for their loving support.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established, a portion of which will be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice.
