Gerald “Gary” Schaapveld, 79, of Homestead, formerly of North Liberty, passed over the rainbow bridge on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Lone Tree. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the funeral home. A private burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nichols at a later date. Gerald A. Schaapveld was born on August 18, 1943, in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Harold and Wilma (Maher) Schaapveld. Gary was a graduate of Lone Tree High School. On May 22, 1965, he was united in marriage to Helen T. Arnold in Lone Tree, Iowa.

Gary worked as a Correctional Officer for the State of Iowa for most of his life. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching television, and going out to eat with Helen. Gary enjoyed meeting new people, talking to them and giving them small gifts.

Gary will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen Schaapveld of Homestead; his son, Eric Schaapveld of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; brothers, Warren (Ann) Schaapveld of Iowa City and Lonny (Nancy) Schaapveld of West Liberty and sisters-in-law, Karen Schaapveld of North Liberty and Joyce Schaapveld of Lone Tree.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Ed Nelson and two brothers, Daniel Schaapveld and Les Schaapveld.
