Kenneth L. Gates, age 82, of Marshalltown, formerly of Blairstown, passed away Friday October 14, 2022, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 21, 2022, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with Rev. Tim Miller officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the Marengo American Legion Post #76 and the U.S. Marines Honor Guard will be at Ohio Cemetery, rural Ladora. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday October 20, 2022, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home at 1301 Summit St., Marshalltown, IA. 50158.

Kenneth is survived by his children Jeff Allen (Jennifer) Gates, daughter Valerie (Zack) Harbin; William Orvin (Laurie) Gates, Bill’s son Matt (Angela) Fults, their children Addy and Quinton Fults; Bill’s daughter Katie Fults, her two daughters Ella and Sophie, and Bill’s son Jeremy Korth, a daughter-in-law Pam Gates, Pam’s son Kenny (Lacy) Gates their children Cadin and Miley, Pam's daughter Jennifer (Jonathan) Kane and their children Tanner and Kambria, a son-in-law Joe Sharp and Joe’s children Chris (Kale) Gates, and their children Knox and Collyns.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol in 2005, his son Dennis Lee Gates in 2011, his daughter Carolyn Kay Sharp in 2014, and his five siblings.

Kenneth LeRoy Gates was born January 15, 1940, in Norco, California, the son of Willard and Louise Rife Gates. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After serving in the Marines, he was united in marriage to Carol Rumple on September 27, 1956, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ken worked for Kaiser Steel in Fontana, California, and National Factories in Miraloma, California until his retirement. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially the driver Terry Labonte. Ken spent his time playing Keno, putting puzzles together, and making many memories while taking his family fishing.
