Kenneth “Ken” Shaull, 71, of North Liberty, Iowa passed away suddenly, but naturally, on August 4, 2022 from a cardiac event.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 9, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, with a funeral service held Wednesday, August 10th, 2022 at 10:00 AM, both at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. A private family committal service will be held at Ridgewood Cemetery.

Kenneth was born on November 24, 1950 in Brooklyn, Iowa to Kenneth R. and Marcella K. (York) Shaull. He graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids in 1969 before attending Kirkwood Community College, where he earned his Associate Degree in Dental Lab Technology. He began his career at a lab in Sioux City before relocating to Coralville. Ken married the love of his life, Ica Dietrich, on May 22, 1982 at the Coralville United Methodist Church. The couple raised their two sons, Nathan and Matthew, and enjoyed 40 memorable and devoted years of marriage while living in Coralville for 23 years before moving to North Liberty in 2005.

He volunteered as a Ranger at Johnson County Kent Park and as part of the Auxiliary Unit at the Coralville Police Department while working at the VA Hospital in Iowa City. In 1980, Ken began his 35-year tenure at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He shared his wealth of knowledge and passion for his career with the thousands of students that he taught throughout his time at the College. Ken impacted the lives of many, both professionally and personally, and was even named “Instructor of the Year” among many other awards and accomplishments. Above all, it was his students and their success that he enjoyed most about his job along with his colleagues that became lifelong friends of his. Ken retired in 2016 but continued to stay busy with other hobbies, especially photography.

He was a former member of the Coralville United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Clarksville Masonic Lodge in Iowa City, and took pride in being a Master Mason. He was an active volunteer in Boy Scouts while raising his boys.

Ken enjoyed all outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, camping, and sitting on the porch at home watching the birds and wildlife, especially a deer that would visit his backyard often. Most recently, he enjoyed taking photos of outdoor scenery, specifically flowers, birds, and butterflies.

Ken was, above all, passionate and proud of his children and grandchildren. Family was the central pillar of Ken’s life and he will be missed for the loving and devoted son, husband, brother, father, grandfather and uncle that he was.

He is survived by his mother Marcella “Kay” Shaull of North English, IA; wife Ica Shaull of North Liberty, IA; two sons: Nathan (Katie) Shaull of Rowley, IA, and Matthew (Kimberly) Shaull of Hiawatha, IA; three grandchildren: Keagan (11), Raphael (5) and Kyler (4); two sisters: Cheryl Shaull of Newton, IA, and Stacy (John) Hlavacek of of Glenrock, WY; and many beloved extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth R. Shaull and sister Rhonda Carlo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Ken may be made to support the College of Dentistry General Gift Fund at The University of Iowa, payable to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, or to The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
