Joyce D. Burke, age 71, of Marengo, passed away Saturday morning, July 23, 2022. Funeral service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, IA at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 28, 2022, with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Kloster Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, IA. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Lewis Burke, her sister Shirley Slaymaker of Mt. Pleasant, SC, sister-in-law, Marla Burke of Clive, IA, sister-in-law, Marcia Burke of Williamsburg, IA, and brother-in-law, Bruce (Kathy) Burke of Amana, IA. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces. Joyce is also survived by her companion dog, Walker, who she loved dearly, and he loved her with all his heart. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Mervin Zuber, sister-in-law, Ruth Zuber and brother-in-law, Douglas Burke.

Joyce was born December 8, 1950 in Marengo, IA, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Teggatz) Zuber. She received her education in the Marengo schools, graduating from Iowa Valley High School in 1969. Joyce married Lewis Burke on March 17, 1969 at St. John's Lutheran Church. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John's Lutheran Church-LCMS in Marengo, IA where she attended all her life.

Joyce worked 16 years at UFG Insurance in Cedar Rapids, IA where she earned her general insurance certificate, her associate in underwriting (AU) and her associate in insurance services (AIS). She worked in the Commercial Underwriting Department covering Illinois, Minnesota, and several southern states. She had many friends at UFG which she still has today. Joyce also owned The Sewing Basket in Marengo for several years and was the Treasurer for St. John's Lutheran Church for 15 years until her cancer diagnosis in January 2020.

She loved flowers and would supervise her husband in the yard. She loved going camping and fishing and was an avid fan of "Columbo". She loved animals especially dogs and cats. She adopted Walker from Safe Haven of Iowa County and requests that memorials should be given to Safe Haven of Iowa County.

Our sincere and special thanks to the staff at Compass Memorial Healthcare and Essence of Life Hospice for their loving compassion and care during her long battle with cancer.
