Mattias “Matt” Fiser, 46, Chief Petty Officer, US Navy retired passed away July 8, 2022, peacefully at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. He fought a long battle with a brain tumor.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Friday, July 15, 2022, at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). A visitation will be held 4:00pm to 6:00pm, Thursday, July 14, 2022, also at the funeral home.

Matt was born December 8, 1975, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Daryl and Bette (Claeys) Fiser. He attended HLV school in Victor, Iowa and graduated in 1994. Soon after, Matt joined the US Navy to go to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. He specialized in Seabee construction. He began his career in Sigonella, Italy and then was transferred to Gulfport, Mississippi where he met his wife Eleanor, who was also stationed there in 1997.

Matt was then transferred back to Annapolis, Maryland where he and his wife Eleanor were married August 22, 2001. He then was transferred back to Gulfport where he deployed twice to Kuwait and Iraq. After his Iraq deployment, he was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida where their son Mattias II was born. They relocated back to Gulfport, and he served another tour in Iraq, Croatia, and 2 stints in Okinawa. In 2014 Matt reported his final command in Port Hueneme, California. He then retired with an honorable discharge in 2018 after serving 24 faithful years in the Navy as a Seabee Builder.

After retirement from the Navy, Matt began a second career with Childserve in Johnston as a maintenance worker. He loved being around the kids and seeing their smiles. He always liked to work on things, make repairs and help people.

Growing up, he was an Eagle Scout and volunteered his time to help others. He enjoyed playing football, wrestling, and baseball in high school.

Matt loved to go fishing and hunting; he like history and watching westerns, was a big Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Matt is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Ankeny: son, Mattias II; parents, Daryl and Bette Fiser of Victor, Iowa; brother, Andrew Fiser of Durant, Iowa; sister, Katie Schultz (Ben) of Marion, Iowa; nephews, Anthony Ward, Noah, Kinnick, Samuel and River.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Angela.
