Policeman Likes to Draw - Painting Mural in Church

Like lots of policemen, Loren G. Teggatz has a second job to go to during his off hours. He’s a sign painter. And when the sign painting business slows down, as it has for him lately, there’s still painting to be done. Teggatz likes to draw and for him it has been a lifelong hobby.

During the past month, he’s been spending a lot of his spare time in the fellowship hall of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where Teggatz has made a canvas of a large concrete block wall.

His ambitious project, occupying a 48-foot stretch of the wall, is a mural depicting the life of Jesus. Teggatz is donating his time to the local congregation, of which he is a member. The mural includes scenes from Christ’s birth, ministry and death. Teggatz sketched all the scenes a month ago, and now is filling in details on the nativity scene. His materials are enamels and artist’s oils.

“I sort of get a relaxation out of painting,” Teggatz says. “I taught myself to draw and could draw ever since I was a kid.’

Oil painting he learned watching French artists while he was stationed overseas with the armed forces.

His special skill fits in nicely with his career as a policeman. When annual reports for the various city departments are drawn up, the Police Department always has plenty of pictures. Teggatz also designed a coloring book the police pass out to youngsters. And his murals decorate the walls of Police Headquarters.

Teggatz, 38, is a sergeant in the local Police Department.
