Scott Charles Hagen of Baton Rouge, La., and formerly of Homestead, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the age of 60. Scott was born on May 7, 1961, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Richard and Lillian (Roemig) Hagen.

He grew up on the family farm outside of Homestead, Iowa. As a child, he attended St. John's Lutheran church in rural Homestead. He graduated from Williamsburg High School, before farming in Iowa county. He earned a B.S.E. degree in civil engineering with honors at the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in civil engineering at the University of Notre Dame. He earned numerous honors of distinction including Diplomate of Coastal Engineering (D.CE), Diplomate of Water Resources Engineering (D.WRE), Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (F.ASCE), and Member of Tau Beta Pi. Scott was inducted into the University of Iowa College of Engineering Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy in 2016 and delivered the "Charge to the Graduates" at Commencement.

Scott and Denise Elizabeth DeLorme were united in marriage on Dec. 18, 1999, in Athens, Ga.

He focused his personal and professional life on the betterment of relationships, a life well-lived, research and the environment.

Scott achieved tenure at the University of Central Florida and was later awarded an Endowed Chair at Louisiana State University. He had a legacy of encouraging academic success among his numerous students including Ph.D. candidates. As a Ph.D., PE, F.ASCE and Louisiana Sea Grant Laborde Chair, he traveled the world to attend conferences, conduct lectures and enjoy the sites. Scott was an avid supporter of the IIHR, Hancher and the University of Iowa in general.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, Richard; his brother, Richard Jr.; sister-in-law, Joyce; and brother-in-law, Robin.

He is survived by his wife, Denise; his mother, Lillian; his sisters, Patricia (Gary) Coleman and Shelly Blaylock; his brother, Blake Hagen; and nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.

A memorial tribute will be arranged at a future date. Scott has been buried at the Ramsey Creek Preserve in South Carolina.
