Thomas Henry Nurre, 84, of The Meth-Wick Community passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus officiating. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors.

Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellyn; daughter, Mary (Carl) Peters of Fulton, Md.; son, Mark Nurre of Marion; two grandchildren, Alyssa Peters of Hermitage, Pa., and Alexandra Peters of Orlando, Fla.; and two sisters-in-law, Edna Nurre of Cedar Rapids and Ginny Nurre of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters-in-laws, Floyd (Dorothy), Robert (Ruth), James and John Nurre and a sister and brother-in-law, Helen (Merle) Schechtman.

Thomas was born March 9, 1936, in Colesburg, the son of Benjamin and Eleanore Hoefer Nurre. He graduated from Colesburg Elementary and was a 1955 graduate of Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and married Mary Ellyn Bahndorf of Amana the following year.

They spent the next five years assigned to Lincoln Air Force Base in Nebraska, Kindley AFB in Bermuda and the Strategic Air Command at Offutt AFB in Omaha. Following his honorable discharge, they moved to Cedar Falls, where Tom attended University of Northern Iowa. He then worked at John Deere in Waterloo for 30 years, retired in 1994 and moved to Amana. In 2017, Tom and Mary Ellyn joined The Meth-Wick Community.

Tom loved his family. His favorite hobby was cars and he loved working on them. He enjoyed going to NASCAR races and car shows with his son-in-law. He also enjoyed visiting, fishing and hunting with his friends and relatives.

The family wants to extend a special thank you to Arbor Place and the Woodlands at Meth-Wick who gave such special care to Tom.
