Rickels was born into her father's hands on Aug. 25, 1948, near North English, Iowa. She was the daughter of Gerald and Greta Ballard, Newberry. Lynette graduated from the North English Schools in 1966. Lynn was a star basketball player in high school when it was still 3 on 3 basketball — she played on the offensive end and was always a high scorer.

She married Norman Schade and the couple had three children, Ryan, Travis and Trisha. They later divorced. She was previously a Sunday school teacher. Lynette worked at the Williamsburg Veterinary Clinic.

She married Daniel Rickels on April 22, 1995, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Anamosa. Lynette was employed at Norwest Bank in Cedar Rapids. She later worked at Hertz Farm Management in Mount Vernon for 20 years, retiring in 2019. Lynette was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she programmed the PowerPoint for the worship services. She also belonged to the Country Friends Dance Club in Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed gardening and helping Dan around the farm. Lynn treasured family time, especially with the grandkids.
