Henry J. Meyer, age 93, of Amana, died December 26, 2020 at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Amana Cemetery, Amana with Elder Alan Trumpold officiating. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Society Church, or Amana Kolonieweg Amana Colonies Trail, in care of Henry Meyer, P.O. Box 202 Amana, IA. 52203. Masks and social distancing will be required at the service. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.

Henry is survived by his wife of 75 years Mildred Meyer, son Tim Meyer (Pam Goschke) of Amana; two grandchildren, Wayne Gregg of Amana, and Dr. Kim Park Nelson (Peter Park Nelson) of Minneapolis. One great-granddaughter, Paige Gregg of Oxford; and two great-great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Kinslie Boyce of Oxford. A sister-in-law, Blanche Meyer of Texas; three nieces, Nancy (Gary) Armbrister of Dallas, TX., Peggy (Les) Roemig of Middle Amana, Wendy (Eckhard) Ziegler of Iowa City; a nephew Les (Linda) Ackerman of South Amana, and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Cynthia Gregg, a brother Harold Meyer, a sister Louisa Meyer Ackerman, a brother-in-law Harry Ackerman, a sister-in-law Rosa Ackerman, and two nieces Judy Ackerman Tarvin and RuthAnn Meyer Nicholson.

Henry was born January 25, 1927 in Amana, Iowa to Fred H. Meyer and Marie Zimmerman Meyer. Following graduation from Amana High School in 1945, Henry entered the Army serving at Fort McClellan in Alabama, a Staff Sergeant in an infantry replacement center. On October 25, 1945, Henry married Mildred Ackerman of South Amana. Following his military discharge in 1946, the couple moved back to Amana where Henry was hired in the purchasing department of Amana Refrigeration.

Henry retired from Amana Refrigeration in 1991 serving as CEO for 10 years, and head of Raytheon’s Appliance Group, a remarkable career of 45 years. Henry was greatly admired and respected by fellow CEOs and other business leaders across Iowa and the nation. More importantly he was respected by all those employees who worked for him in Amana, and he appreciated each one of them.

Henry was very active in his community, playing for the town baseball team, the Amana Freezers, Life member of the Amana Church Society, long time Sunday School teacher, Amana School Board member, Amana Bike Trail and other service organizations. He served on many state economic boards, including the Governor’s Council of Economic Development, and the University of Iowa’s Tippie Business College.

He was also very involved with the University of Iowa’s athletic programs, through special events such as the Amana V.I.P. golf tournaments and basketball tournaments that supported both Men’s and Women’s athletics. He was the driving force behind the concept and creation of the Amana Kolonieweg Trail that has benefited so many since its groundbreaking in 1998.

Henry and Mildred spent many winters in their retirement home in Ft. Myers Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather and Henry was able to play many rounds of golf, which he greatly enjoyed. Henry was a kind and gentle man who loved his family deeply and was greatly respected by all who knew him.

The family of Henry Meyer would like to thank the staff of The Gardens of Cedar Rapids for their compassionate care these past three years, and Hospice of Mercy for their assistance.
