Phyllis Jean Sanders, age 93, of Marengo, Iowa passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Marengo Compass Memorial Healthcare and in the care of Iowa County Essence of Life Hospice.

Inurnment service will be at Sixteen Cemetery in Thornburg, Iowa at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis was born June 6, 1926 to Louis and Lena (Height) Crider in Poweshiek County. She gradated from Montezuma High School in 1944. After high school, she worked at the rationing board in Brooklyn. Her job was to go to the board meetings and if the applications were okay, she tore out and destroyed coupons that were not allowed or approved. She would go to stores and take inventory of the food on the shelves.

She married Orville M. Sanders on January 14, 1946 and they farmed together around Montezuma and What Cheer.

Phyllis enjoyed college basketball, playing a wide variety of card/board games and couldn’t be beat at Scrabble.

Left to honor her memory are her daughter and son-in-law Barb and Jim Howar; grandchildren Jodi Bacon, Angela (Andy) Hellman, Lucas (Ashley) Howar, and Jacob (Jessica) Howar. Her great grandchildren Allicia and Dylan Bacon, Alesha, Alex, and Ayden Hellman, Ryan, Kyle, and Kaley Howar.

She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Barbara and Shirley Crider; brothers-in-law Ronald, Bob, Marvin (Sandy), and Roger (Joan) Sanders as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Lena Crider, husband Orville; son David; daughter Marilyn; brothers Donald (Frances), Maynard, and Keith Crider; sisters Vada (Bill) Trinkle, Arlene (Dwight) Purdum, and Maxine Crider; brothers-in-law Donn and Clyde Sanders; sisters-in-law Johnnie, Dixie and Lareta Sanders.
