Darlene Von Ahsen passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the Colonial Manor in Amana at the age of 93.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Friday, December 27, 2019, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for Immanuel Lutheran Church or Essence of Life Hospice. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.

Darlene Von Ahsen was born March 12, 1926 near Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Caroline (Hopp) Schmidt. She attended St. John Lutheran School. Darlene was united in marriage to Mervin Von Ahsen on October 6, 1946 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. She was a homemaker and later worked for Sheller Globe until retiring in 1989.

She enjoyed, sewing, quilting, bowling, playing cards, dancing and gardening. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and Chicago Cubs fan. Darlene especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends along with attending the grandchildren's activities. Darlene was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg.

Darlene is survived by three children, Connie Mekus of Des Moines, Sheryl (David) Boughton of Williamsburg and Neal (Sharon) Von Ahsen of Des Moines; son-in-law, Tom Bates of Wautauga, Texas; five grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Lorena Joseph of Columbus, Nebraska and Helen Von Ahsen of Newhall.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Paulette Bates, a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Von Ahsen, a son-in-law, Jack Mekus, three brothers, Harlan, Oren and Wayne Schmidt and a sister Arlene Sanderfeld.
