Larry D. Schlue passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He had suffered from lung cancer attributed to Agent Orange exposure during his tour of duty in Vietnam.

A memorial service is noon Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at First Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine, Iowa, with Pastor Dean Duncan officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Private family burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Iowa.

Mr. Schlue was born on Jan. 19, l941, in Burlington, Iowa, to parents, Luella Niebuhr Schlue and Vernon F. Schlue. He received a B.B.A. (minor in psychology, sociology) from the University of Iowa and a J.D. degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1965. Upon receiving his law degree, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and entered the Naval Justice School at Newport, R.I., graduating in 1965. From 1966 to 1967, he served with the 3rd Marine Division at Hue, Vietnam. His responsibilities were reviewing all special courtsmartial for the commanding general and also acted extensively as trial and defense counsel. He was awarded the Naval Achievement Medal for his work in Vietnam. Following his tour in Vietnam, he was assigned as a legal assistance officer to judge advocate general at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

In Sept. l969, he married Duronda Winters in the Fort Scott Chapel on the Presidio of San Francisco. The couple moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa, in November l970, where Mr. Schlue was employed at the Kollmorgen Law Firm, later becoming a partner in the Kollmorgen Schlue Law Firm. In 1974, he was elected county attorney of Benton County. Schlue sold the practice and retired in 2010.

Mr. Schlue enjoyed his retirement, embarking on many road trips, visiting national parks, presidential libraries, attending grandchildren's extracurricular activities and visiting friends and family throughout the country. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Schlue was also the director of the Mansfield Foundation of Belle Plaine and was an active member of the First Lutheran Church of Belle Plaine.

He is survived by his wife, Duronda; and two children, Samantha (Mark) Ironside of Swisher, Iowa, and John (Shawna) Schlue of Los Angeles, Calif.; as well as five grandchildren, Grace, Hannah and Maggie Ironside and Jack and Luella Schlue; and sisters, Mary Ann Kollmorgen of Belle Plaine, and Dorothy Kaiser of Williamsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Luella Schlue; and his brother, John William Schlue.

He will be remembered for his kind, gentle nature and strong faith in the Lord.
