Amana
Henry George Schuhmacher, 95, of Amana, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, at Colonial Manor of Amana. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, rural Atkins. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Henry's name has been established.
Henry is survived by his son, Henry T. Schuhmacher of Ankeny; a daughter, Diane (Mineard) Smith of Watkins; four grandchildren, Cindy Smith of Walford, Kimberly (Jack) Shaw of Mesa, Ariz., and John and Emily Schuhmacher of Ankeny; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn Wilson, Mackenzie (Andy) Kasner and Nicholas Wilson; two great-greatgrandchildren, Scarlett Burgess and William Kasner; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose, in 2017; a granddaughter, Mary, in infancy; a sister, Anne Marie Freshour; and a brother, Roy Schuhmacher.
Henry was born June 18, 1923, in Amana, the son of George and Lina (Roemig) Schuhmacher. He graduated from Amana High School in 1940. Henry enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater during World War II under Patton's Third Army in the Battle of the Bulge. He was united in marriage to Rose Mary Carville on July 25, 1944, at Holy Trinity Church, Walford. They made their home in Amana, where Henry worked for the Amana Society in the building department and at Amana Refrigeration. In 1958, Henry returned to the Amana Society and became manager of the Amana Society Builders. He retired in 1987.
Henry and Rose traveled extensively and traveled to all 50 states, Europe and Canada. They always enjoyed playing cards and entertaining family and friends. Their biggest joy was their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
