Obituary for Roy Verlyn Weiss

Roy V. Weiss, 83, of Deep River, died on October 3, 2018, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service has been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 6th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, south of Victor, with Pastor Stuart Rethwisch, officiating. Organist will be Marna Mohr. Pallbearers will be Roger Kuesel, Kurtis Nauser, Mike Roberts, Loren Timm, Paul Timm and Joe Tschantre. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the ALS Foundation.

Roy was born on November 12, 1934, on the family farm near Deep River, the son of Ralph Roy and Marine Loretta Timm Weiss. He grew up in the Deep River area and attended St. John’s Parochial School near Victor. He was a 1953 graduate of Deep River High School.

Roy was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church where he was also a life-long member.

Roy lived his entire life on the family farm. He loved farming and raising hogs and cattle. He knew the value of hard work and running a successful farm operation. He was a steward of the land and enjoyed operating his Oliver brand tractors. Roy was quiet-natured and liked all his cats, dogs, and cows. He was a caretaker for his mother when her health began to fail.

Survivors include one brother, Laverne (Ann) Weiss of Independence, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leland Weiss in 1955.
