Died at his residence in this city, Saturday, Jan. 11, 1903 at 7:16 p.m. Mr. James W. Jarboe, aged 82 years 9 months and 1 day.

James W. Jarboe was born in Frederick County, Maryland on April 20, 1820. His youth was spent in his native state, where he grew to manhood. In 1847 he enlisted as a private in Company 11, 3rd Regiment, United States Dragoons for service in the Mexican War. He returned from the service suffering from paralysis of the left side caused by severe injuries received from serving his country. He was afflicted with this ailment until his death. The greater part of the time since his return from the Mexican War, Mr. Jarboe has made his home with his sister, Mrs. T.A. Simmons and family, residing in Frederick County, Maryland, until the year 1887 at which time the members of the said Simmons family, together with Mr. Jarboe, came to Iowa and located near the city of Marengo. During the time he has resided in Iowa county (except the last year), he made his home with Mr. E.A. Simmons, of Washington Township. Mr. Jarboe was a kind, patient man, strong in his convictions, and accorded to his fellow man all the comforts and privileges which he himself wished to enjoy. He is kindly remembered by all who knew him during life.

The funeral occurred Tuesday from the late residence, then to St. Patrick's church,where the usual funeral rights were observed, and thence to Calvary cemetery, where the body was laid away to await the final resurrection. Six grand nephews of the deceased acted as pall-bearers, towit: Raymond, R.K., R.A., Mark, Frank and Fred Simmons, who tenderly and lovingly paid this last sad and solemn tribute of respect to their beloved relative."
