Gary was born on August 16th, 1953 to David and Susan (Primrose) Volz in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was united in marriage to Lori Brenneman, on July 24th, 1976 in Norway, IA, where they were later blessed with 3 children.

He worked for many years in the automotive industry, and later spent 22 years as an engineer for Kinze Manufacturing. He also operated GNL Engineering, a business that he and Lori started together over 8 years ago. Gary was the guy who could do anything; truly a jack of all trades. He was the “go-to-guy” for friends and family who needed help with anything.

Driven by his strong faith, he never took life’s blessings for granted, and would often tell others how blessed and thankful he was for the life he had been given, even in the face of trial and illness.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lori; son, Shane Volz of Tiffin; daughters, Jodi (Denny) Ballard of Amana, and Heidi Hollenbeck of Swisher; 7 grandchildren whom he adored and spent so much time with, Mitchell and Trevor Volz, Nolan, Brayden, Aubrey, and Gianna Ballard, and Malea Hollenbeck; and siblings, Linda (John) Frese, Dee (Peter) Vesanovic, Deb (Jerry) Kiwala, Bruce (Cherie) Volz, and Keith (Kay) Volz.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, and infant sister, Connie.

Gary inspired many with his courage and will to fight. He was blessed with many amazing doctors and care staff throughout that journey. His family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at UIHC, St. Luke’s, PCI Oncology, and Essence of Life Hospice. Memorials may be directed to St. John XXIII and Essence of Life Hospice.

Brosh Funeral Service of Norway is assisting the family.
