CURTIS DOW MAHANNAH
On the sixth day of May, 1920, all that was mortal of Curtis Dow Mahannah, passed away at his home in North English, Iowa after a short illness. The deceased was born in Knox County, Ohio, November 11, 1854, and died at the age of sixty five years, five months and twenty five days. While still in early boyhood, he was brought to Iowa by his parents, who traveled in a covered wagon as it was before the days of railroads, and in 1857 the family of which he was a member settled near North English, where the rest of his useful life, was spent.
On Feb. 21, 1869, he united with the Christian church at North English. He was only 15 years old when he took this step, but from that day up until the day of his death, which was over 50 years, he lived a noble Christian life. For 85 years he was chorister of the congregation and lead the singing. He loved the church and was deeply interested in the work of the church.
He was a man prominent in community affairs. He was one that stood for what was right and best. He was a loyal member of three fraternal organizations; namely, the Odd Fellows, Woodman, and Knights of Pythias, and was a charter member of the last named organization. He held offices of trust and honor in these several lodges. His business career dates from the spring of 1886, when he entered the furniture and undertaking business.
When he was 21 years old, he was married to Eva Williams, Feb. 10, 1876. This union was blessed with twelve children, one of whom died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Mahannah, his aged mother, Mrs. Sophia Mahannah, his seven sons, Clark of Cedar Rapids, Willis of Butte, Nebraska, Verne of Moville, Ia., and Ross, Ray, Ernest and Wayne of North English, and by his four daughters, Mrs. Bess Mineck and Edith Hiltbrunner of Cedar Rapids, and Mary and Nelle Mahannah of North English. He also leaves to morn his departure, six sisters, Mrs. Pettibone, Mrs. Dixon, Mrs. W.E. Brown, Mrs. I. M. Cleavenger, Mrs. C..A. Burt and Mrs. I.E. Mathews, and by three of his brothers, W.J.
