Funeral service for Benedict “Ben” Osweiler, 86, Osceola, will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 13, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. He died Dec. 8, 2017, at the Clarke County Hospital.

The Rev. Dave Polich will officiate at the service.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sigourney.

Kale Funeral Home, Osceola, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.kalefuneralhome.com .

The family will greet friends for a celebration of life from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at Powell Funeral Home, North English.

Memorials may be made to HCI Care Services of Osceola or the Knights of Columbus in Osceola.

Benedict "Ben" Howard Osweiler was born Aug. 20, 1931, the son of John and Mae (Webb) Osweiler, in Sigourney. He received his education in North English and graduated from North English. He proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, from 1951-1953, where he took part in the battle of Pork Chop Hill.

He married Patricia Jolene Steyne on Nov. 10, 1956, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, and was blessed with seven children.

Ben farmed for 19 years in North English and Green Valley Area. He then worked in Iowa City for the State of Iowa Liquor Store and then transferred to Williamsburg. After the state closed these stores he was employed by the Iowa Department of Human Services. The couple moved to Altoona and Carlisle before moving to Osceola.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the V.F.W. in Osceola. He was an avid Iowa State fan and was an accomplished woodworker, receiving many awards from the Iowa State Fair competitions including best of show. He also enjoyed golfing, manicuring his yard, his Chihuahua dogs "Patty" and "Sparky", playing the card game "Pepper" and playing "Kings Corners" with his grandkids.

Osweiler leaves to cherish his memory one son, Tim (Cherie), Cedar Rapids; daughter, Marcy (George) Fotiadis, Osceola; son, Phil (Holly), Williamsburg; son, Randy (Candace), Williamsburg; son, Roger (Paula), Victoria, Minn.; son, Kevin (Anita), Pine Bluff, Ark.; daughter, Brenda (Ed) Hebl, Corydon; sisters, Margie Clarahan, Harper; Imogene Steele, Barnes City; Donna Daub, Kankakee, Ill.; 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his loving wife Patricia, his parents; father-in-law, John Steyne, mother-in-law, Mayme Steyne; brothers, Ed, Paul, Dan, Joe, Bob and Mervin "Pat" Osweiler; sister, Marcella Osweiler; brothers-in-law, Ken Daub, Les Steele, and Ken Clarahan; a grandson, Heath Osweiler, and step-granddaughter, Jennifer Blake.
