Ursel Marilla Riess, age 102, died of complications of age on Friday, September 21, 2007 at the English Valley Care Center in North English, IA.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Christian Church in North English with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time at the church.

Ursel Marilla Riess was born on August 17, 1905, in North English, IA, the daughter of Thomas M. And Gertrude S. Mason Markwell.

Ursel graduated from North English High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught a short time in country schools and later worked in the office and lunch room at English Valleys Schools.

She was united in marriage to Raymond F. Riess in December 1926 at the North English Christian Church parsonage. They farmed west of North English.

Raymond preceded her in death in 1951 and Ursel moved into town in 1955. Ursel also worked for the North English Telephone Cooperative “until they went dial.”. She was a member of the North English Christian Church and was active in the neighborhood club. She loved to dance in her younger years and enjoyed visiting with her friends.

Ursel became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in March 2002.
She is survived by a daughter: Bonnie (John) Parker of Burlington, IA; 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Orlyn Riess and a brother Max Markwell.
