Bernadine Gorman Hixenbaugh, 100, died Monday, July 10, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Service: 2 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bernadine is survived by her children, Julie (Lynn) Lawrence of Hiawatha and Daniel M. (Dori) Gorman of Waterloo; daughter-in-law, Carol; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward J. Gorman, and second husband, Claude F. Hixenbaugh; son, Edward J. Gorman Jr.; grandson, Ben Sufficool; and one great-grandson.

Bernadine Mary was born May 18, 1917, in Holbrook, the daughter of Daniel and Kathryn Flannagan Driscoll. She married Edward J. Gorman in Cedar Rapids on May 29, 1939. He died Feb. 9, 1977. On Dec. 30, 1977, she married Claude Hixenbaugh at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He died in 2008.

Bernadine worked at Collins Radio and Killian's Department Store and was a buyer at Armstrong's Department Store for 19 years. She taught CCD classes and was a Eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for many years. She volunteered at Mercy Medical Center and was a tutor for the Kirkwood Literacy program. Bernadine was a patient advocate and over the years chaired the Care Review Committee at several nursing homes and care facilities.

Bernadine will be missed by her devoted family and friends.
