Doris Donohoe, 92, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Higley Mansion, Cedar Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Rosary service: 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, followed by visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: also one hour before the service at the church. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her daughters, Jan (Mike) Drahozal, Karen (Dean) Dennis, Julie (Denny) Gilds and Patty (Fred) Russo; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several close friends.

Doris Elizabeth Pirkl was born July 4, 1924, in Iowa County, to Charles and Johanna (Lohmann) Pirkl. She married Irving Donohoe on Dec. 6, 1940, in Cedar Rapids. She was a homemaker, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for 64 years, a founding charter member of Arc of East Central Iowa, and was a member of St. Theresa Circle at Immaculate Conception. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing Five Hundred, and especially spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She also was a great cook and seamstress.

Doris' five daughters were her pride and joy, and she loved being part of their lives and attending family events. She was a selfless caregiver to many, a dedicated advocate for people with disabilities, and lived a long, wonderful life.

She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Mary Jane; and her three siblings.

Memorials may be directed to Arc of East Central Iowa, Camp Courageous or Hospice of Mercy.

Doris' family would like to sincerely thank the staff members at Higley Mansion for their exceptional above and beyond care and Hospice of Mercy for their generosity and compassion for Doris.
