Samuel Murphy of Marengo, Crosses
To the Great BeyondMarengo Iowa, April 6, 1897 – SPECIAL: Samuel J. Murphy, one of the oldest settlors of this part of the country, died this morning, aged 87. He was an unusually active man for his age and until within a few weeks ago before his death enjoyed fair health.
Among the late campaign he was one of the most active workers, being a through McKinley man long before the convention dominated him. From May, 1871, to December, 1871, he was postmaster at Marengo.
Deceased leaves a wife and four sons, Samuel J. Jr., presiding elder of the M. E. Church, Ft. Scott, Kan.; John D., an attorney at Ogden, Utah; Waugh, stock dealer at North Platte, Neb., and William B. with whom he has been residing on the old home farm four miles from Marengo.
