Edwin Jahlas, 69, of rural Deep River, died on Saturday, Feb. 4, at his home.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Victor, with the Rev. Stuart Rethwisch officiating. Interment with military honors will follow the service at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church following the committal service.

Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Smith Funeral Home, Victor, and his family greeting friends starting at 4 p.m.

Memorials may be designated to the Edwin Jahlas Memorial Fund and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347. Condolences may be shared with his family online at www.smithfh.com .

Edwin Charles Jahlas was born the son of William Henry Jahlas and Ruth Mae (Hessenius) Jahlas on June 5, 1947, in Marengo. He was raised on the family farm near Deep River and graduated in 1966 from HLV High School in Victor. Following his education he began working at Amana Refrigeration in Amana.

Ed honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He returned from the service and worked at Amana and also farmed with his dad. On Jan. 9, 1971, he was united in marriage to Connie Jane Beck at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Victor. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Amy. They resided and farmed in the rural Deep River area all of their lives.

Ed was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a 4-H leader. He dearly loved his family and adored his grandchildren. He always looked forward to time spent with his grandchildren and attending their activities. He was also an outdoorsman who loved farming the land, raising horses, and hunting. His other enjoyments were collecting toy tractors and guns. “Uncle Ed” will be remembered for his sense of humor, helping others in need, and for having a heart of gold.

Ed is survived by his wife of 46 years, Connie Jahlas, Deep River; daughter, Amy (Keith) Rieks of Victor; 6 grandchildren, Justin Rieks of New Hampton, Dominick Sherman of Victor, Jordan and Jaylin VanLancker, Victor, Kimberly Rieks, Victor, and Marissa Parizek, Victor; mother, Ruth Jahlas, Deep River; sister, Patricia (Walter) Van Waus, Worthington, Minn.; brother, John (Karen) Jahlas, Cedar Rapids; and all his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Dwayne.
