Valerie Sue Mowry, 48, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Lowden, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha and went to be in her mother’s arms in Heaven. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, conducted by Father O’Connor with visitation one hour prior to service. Vigil Service: 5:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2017, with visitation from 5:30-8:00 p.m., at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

She is survived by her father, Bob and stepmother Elaine of Williamsburg, Iowa; brother, Chris (Gail) Mowry of Gainesville, Florida; sisters, Catherine (Alfonso) Perez of Westfield, Indiana, Angie (Scott) Daugherty of Cedar Rapids, Mary ( Don) Roberts of Fishers, Indiana; two nephews and nine nieces; three step-brothers, Mark (Lisa) Hanson, Marty ( Rachael) Hanson and Mitch Hanson; two step-sisters, Diana (Russ) Nichols and Angie (Scott) Westcott of Williamsburg.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and mother, Elizabeth Mowry.

Val was born on June 10, 1968, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth “Betty” (Busche) Mowry.

She grew up in Lowden, Iowa and attended Special Education classes in Tipton, graduating in 1987. Val then went to live in a group home in Iowa City. She attended West High School for two years graduating in 1989. She went to work at Goodwill. In 1997, Val moved to a Discovery Living Group Home in Cedar Rapids and continued to work at Goodwill, retiring after 25 years in 2014. She enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics, attending Camp Courageous and was a Hawkeye fan at heart. She attended many Iowa football games with her family. Val thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her house mates and staff. She loves spending time with family, especially her nieces and nephews as she was their favorite aunt. Val was truly one of God’s angels here on earth.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Discovery Living for their care of Val over the last 20 years.

Memorials may be directed to the family and they will donate to Discovery Living.
