Bertha Martha “Bert” Buelow, age 80 of Marengo, was called to her eternal home on Thursday morning, December 2, 2004 at Windmill Manor in Coralville, following a long illness. Funeral services will be 11:30 A.M. Saturday, December 4, 2004 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 P.M. Friday, December 3, 2004 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Sunday School.

Bertha Martha Meyer was born May 9, 1924 to Theophil and Bertha Wieser Meyer near Maryland, New York. The family moved to Iowa when Bert was very young. They lived on various farms in Iowa County. As a young woman, Bert worked at Collins Radio in the repair department. She married Robert Buelow on November 1, 1947 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple made their home on the family farm near Marengo. Bert was always busy; as a wife and mother, taking care of their five children, Connie, Marian, Bob, Ginger and Dan; working on the farm, gardening, canning and participating in church as a Sunday School teacher, choir, ladies aid and countless other activities. She also was Robert’s campaign manager during his years as Iowa County Supervisor. She held positions at Hallmar Nursing Home, Landmark Restaurant and Merle’s Jewelry.

Bertha is survived by four children, Connie (Bill) Kammrath of Elmwood Park, IL, Bob (Cherie) Buelow of Solon, Ginger (Doug) Kohoutek of Swisher, and Dan (Amy) Buelow of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Aster, Andrew, April and Geoffrey Kammrath, Brian and Brianne Buelow, Beth and Jessie Kohoutek, and Katie (Clint) Haight. In addition she is survived by step grandchildren, Toby (Coreena) Kelley, Lawrence Kelley, Kyle (Meghann) Kelley and Jill Kelley; and step great-grandchildren, Dakota and Meadow, Taylor, Chloe, Madeline and Aidan; and sisters, Frieda Schroeder and Marie Ramsey; sister-in-law Florence Meyer and brother-in-law Al Sommerfeld and many nieces and nephews and a special friend, Millie Van Hoeck.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Robert in 1987, a daughter, Marian and a brother Theophil.

Those close to Bert will always remember her for her love for family and friends, her selflessness and willingness to help in any way, and her strong and independent spirit. Bert’s bright and positive outlook, spiritual influence and gentle sense of humor will be missed, but she will always occupy a special place in the hearts of those privileged to know her.

Bert’s family would like to thank Angie, Lyndsay and others with Amenity Hospice, and the staff at Windmill Manor for their care and concern for Bert.
