Funeral service for Fred Martens, 71, Coralville, formerly of Marengo, was held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 27, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. He died Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Windmill Manor, Coralville.

The Rev. Andrew Gray officiated at the service.

Burial was in Goldenrod Cemetery, Deep River. Pallbearers were Mark, Dan, Michael and Max Martens and Trent Miller.

Fredrick William Martens was born July 24, 1944, near Deep River, the son of George and Lilia (Beyers) Martens. He was raised and educated in Deep River.

He honorably served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 and was stationed at Fort Hamilton in New York. He returned to Iowa and resided in Keota, where he operated a drainage tile operation. He then was employed as a butcher at various grocery stores in the area. His enjoyments included taking long bike rides and collecting toy tractors.

Martens is survived by his children, Mark (Amy) Martens, Wellman; Kim Kram, Cedar Rapids, and Daniel Martens, Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and siblings, Merle (Arlette) Martens, West Des Moines, and Oris (Betty) Martens, Middle Amana.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Merita Brecht and Eulalia Garrett.
