Loren Dale “Smitty” Schmidt, son of Ervin G.H. and Miriam (Jones) Schmidt was born May 6, 1940 in Iowa County, Iowa. He graduated from Gladbrook High School with the class of 1959. Following high school Loren served his country in the United States Army, before receiving his honorable discharge in 1965. He was united in marriage to Marcia Burns on October 28, 1967 in Marshalltown. To this union two children were born: Doug and Scott.

Smitty worked for several years at Gethmann Construction in Gladbrook. He then became self-employed as an over the road trucker for the next 40 years. He retired in 2005 only to turn around and buy a dump truck which he operated for another 10 years. He was a devote Missouri Synod Lutheran who passed his love of God on to his family. Smitty was a long time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook. He was also a member of the American Legion. He had a great sense of humor and was the king of “one liners.” He had even begun passing on his one liners to his grandchildren, even if they were a little young. There were two reasons for the big smile on his face, he had either just told a joke or he wanted you to wonder what was coming next. He was a regular for coffee at the “man cave” in Gladbrook. Smitty’s family was number one in his heart and he will truly be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia of Gladbrook; sons, Doug (Paula) Schmidt of Ankeny, IA and Scott (Jaime) Schmidt of Gladbrook; four grandchildren, Brandon and Nick Schmidt and Parker and Bennett Schmidt; Siblings, Orlen (Kay) Schmidt, Marvin (Margene) Schmidt and Marlene (Arnie) Cornelius; and sister-in-law, Marilea Schmidt. Smitty was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Melvin Schmidt.
