Memorial service for Hugh E. Carter, 72, Britt, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at First Lutheran Church, Britt. He died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

The Rev. William Rosin officiated at the service.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Hugh Edward Carter was born Jan. 28, 1943, the son of James and Lucille (Archibald) Carter, Des Moines. He was raised in Radcliffe and graduated with the class of 1961. Following high school, he attended Ellsworth Junior College and Iowa State Teachers College, which had become the University of Northern Iowa by the time he graduated.

He married Nancy Ritland July 28, 1962, in Garden City. The couple had three children. Following his graduation from UNI, he taught in the Manly-North Central School District for 10 years. During this time, he obtaind his masters in administration and left North Central to become the elementary principal at HLV, Victor. In 1985, he relocated to Britt, where he held the same position. He retired in 2004 and the couple continued to make Britt their home.

During his teaching career, he coached a variety of sports and helped lead the 1978 North Central boys golf team to qualify for the state tournament. He also served on the A.E.A’s transition team for the state of Iowa for several years.

He was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church, Britt. He served on church council and he and his wife participated in the Faith Weavers after school youth program for several years. He also served as a confirmation mentor at the church.

He loved golfing and had hit a hole-in-one on four separate occasions, each at different courses. A strong family man, he also enjoyed attending the various sporting and school events and activities of his grandchildren. He raised his children to have a strong sense of faith and placed a high emphasis on education.

The couple enjoyed traveling and in 2008 had an opportunity to visit a former foreign exchange student, Francois (Danielle) Schultz, in Switzerland. Francois had been hosted by Nancy’s parents many years prior.

Carter is survived by his wife, Nancy, Britt; daughters, Monica (Brad) McWilliams, Knoxville, and Sandra (Christopher) Fisher, Basehor, Kan.; one son, David (Lisa) Carter, West Des Moines; grandchildren, Blake and Bryant McWilliams, Zachary, Nicholas and Samantha Fisher and Gabe and Jessica Carter; one brother, Gary (Marleen) Carter, Yuma, Ariz.; sister, Rita (Leonard) Stauffer, Iowa Falls; sister-in-law, Lois (Wendell) Frette, Jewell; brothers-in-law, Curtis (Linda ) Ritland, Tempe, Ariz., and Don (Deb) Ritland, Radcliffe, and many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Valerie Louise McWilliams; a brother-in-law, Leslie Ray Ritland and his parents-in-law, Lester and Romaine Ritland.
