Obituary for John Walter Schlotterback

John W. Schlotterback, 86, of Marion, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. Visitation: 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2015 at the funeral home by Rev. Peter Mitchell. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #298, Marion, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children, Lyn (Frank) Mickam of Marion, Lori (Allen) Mast of Marion, and J.D. (Susann) Schlotterback of Marion; step-children, Kirk (Karen) Rutledge of Salem, Oregon, and Kris (Chad) Van Hauen of Johnston, IA; grandchildren, Sarah Mickam, Jenny (Shawn) Ray, Chad (Jenny) Mast, Jerimiah (Melissa) Gunzenhauser, Margie (Steve) Clow, Jon Schlotterback, Paige Schlotterback, Tyler Moriarty, Jordan Moriarty, Meghan (Cameron) Gallop, Nick (Danielle) Rutledge, Kaitlyn Rutledge; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ann Lorenz of Marion, Maxine Wardenburg of Williamsburg, and Ida McSkimming of West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Luella; sisters, Joyce Wells and Jean Wright.

John was born September 7, 1929, to Walter and Esther (Lensch) Schlotterback in Benton County, Iowa. He was a Sergeant for the United States Army and served during the Korean War.

John married his first wife, Luella Steggall on August 20, 1951. She passed away in 2005. On July 15, 2007, he married Marilyn Rutledge in Marion, Iowa.

John owned and operated Schlotterback Realtors. John was a member of Marion Christian Church in Marion and Past Commander of American Legion Post #298, Marion, Iowa. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #6 of Marion, the El Kahir Shrine and Realtor Emeritus with CRAAR for 40+ years. John served for 40 years for the City of Marion, Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustments.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Marion Foundation and Alumni Association 777 South 15th Street, PO Box 606 Marion, IA 52302 in John’s memory.
