Blairstown

Charles A. Vogel, 89, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo under the care of Essence of Life Hospice of Amana. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at St. John Catholic Church in Blairstown, with Father Craig Steimel as celebrant. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown, with graveside military rites conducted by M.J. Kirby American Legion Post of Blairstown and Iowa Military Honors. Visitation will be at Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.

A memorial fund has been established.

Charles was born July 4, 1926, near Keota to Carl and Berniece (Peiffer) Vogel. On Nov. 27, 1947, he was united in marriage to Bernice Adam at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in the Clear Creek area of Keota.

Charles served his nation in the U.S. Navy from Aug. 17, 1945, until receiving a military hardship discharge on Dec. 7, 1945.

He farmed all his life and sold Pioneer Seed Corn. He was the top salesman for four years straight.

Charles enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards with neighbors and visiting with people.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Keystone; his children, Audrey (Allen) Waterbeck of Chelsea, Ronald (Connie) Vogel of St. Louis, Mo., David (JoAnn) Vogel of Clutier, Cindy (Ben) Ternes of Swisher and Patrick (Tricia) Vogel of Elkhorn, Wis.; his grandchildren, Kristin (Ted) Schulz, Karla (Kalor) Robison, Brett (Mindy) Waterbeck, Kelli (Andy) Switzer, Craig Vogel, Chad Vogel, Lindsey Vogel, Jill (Jeremy) Gatlin, Josh Vogel, Molly (Bryan) Corley, Tanya (Brady) Van Voorst, Matthew (Samantha) Ternes, Jodie (Brandon) Yuska, Christopher (Lisa) Vogel, Courtney (William) Bastian, Cody Vogel and Callie Vogel; 25 great-grandchildren; two more on the way; his brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Elizabeth Vogel of Hereford, Texas; his sister-in-law, Irene Dickinson of Birmingham; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Elmer and Helen Adam of Richland; and his sister-in-law, Isabel Adam of Sigourney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Gregory and John Vogel in 1972; his brother and sister in-law, Hubert and Marge Vogel; his brothers-in-law, Charles Dickinson and Leo Adam; and his father- and mother in-law, John and Theresa Adam.
