Joyce was born in Newhall, Iowa, lived in Atkins, Whitwer Farm and Marion. She graduated from Marion High School in 1946. She married Bob Wells in 1947 and worked at Colonial Bakery. They lived in Hornick, Correctionville, and Humboldt, Iowa, during the 1950s. From this marriage were four children, Marcia, Steve, Randy and Susie. After Bob's death in 1959, she returned to Marion. In 1968, she married Garold Wells. He brought into this union Bobby, Bill, Frank, Pat, Susan, Jayne and Ree. Together they had Kari.

Joyce crocheted 'snowflakes' and knitted dish cloths, slippers and mittens. She enjoyed sewing, baking, genealogy, gardening, and weekends at Leisure Lake.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Marion, Marion American Legion and Jones County Genealogy Club. She received the Governor's Award for her genealogy work.

They retired to Leisure Lake and then moved back to Marion. After Garold's death in 1992, she enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids in her picket--fenced bungalow across from the old fire station.
