John H. Nidey, 94, of Cedar Manor in Tipton, formerly of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015.

John was born July 8, 1921, in East York, Ill., to John and Bertha (Hoskinson) Nidey. When John was a boy, the family moved to Iowa, where they farmed near Tiffin, then Williamsburg.

John served in the Army Air Corps in Japan from 1945 to 1946 and homesteaded in Alaska, where he met the love of his life, Trudy Vandermeer. John and Trudy married in 1949, returned to Iowa, and had four children, Frank (Shannon) of Cedar Rapids, Floyd (Bev) of LeClaire, Mark and companion Sue Mellecker of Iowa City and Bertha (Bryan) Brook of Tiffin.

In 1966, John, Trudy and family moved from the farm to Coralville, then Iowa City. John worked at MRC, later Westinghouse, until John and Trudy, in 1983, began enjoying a long, happy retirement.

John was preceded in death by Trudy in 2003; his parents; his siblings and their spouses, Floyd and Hazel Nidey, Ruskin, Roy and Doris and Lenore and Ira Brogan; of that generation, only Helen remains.

John is survived by his children; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a special family member, Vicki Issen, and her daughters.

John deeded his body to the University of Iowa.

A gathering to celebrate John's life will be held Sunday, Oct. 11, from 1 until 5 p.m. at Shelter No. 1, Upper City Park, Iowa City. Ice cream will be served.

Memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Cedar Manor in Tipton.
