Gladys McShane
Springville

Gladys Mary Hindman McShane, 102, entered eternal rest in the arms of her Savior on June 22, 2015. A celebration of Gladys' life will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Springville Presbyterian Church. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion and one hour before the service. Burial: Springville Cemetery. A light lunch will be served at the church following the service.

Gladys is missed by daughters, Barbara Colehour of Cedar Rapids and Carole (Dave) Hoskins of Springville; and grandchildren: Amanda Colehour (Dan Sarasin), and children, Sam, Jacob and Ben, of Cedar Rapids; Dan (Rene) Colehour of Nashville, Tenn.; and Megan Sova-Tower (Andrew Tower), and children, Luke Reshetar and Elizabeth Tower, of Fairfax.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ivan; his wife, Mildred; and son-in-law, Jim Colehour.

Gladys was born Dec., 2, 1912, to Harry and Ivy (Swecker) Hindman. She lived her early years in Iowa until 1929, when the family relocated to Amity, Ore. She drove her mother and grandmother from Iowa to Oregon in a car with side curtains. Gladys played nine-girl basketball on the Amity High School team. She had many stories about her family's adventure. The family returned to Iowa the summer of 1930. Gladys then lived in Springville, Iowa, with her grandmother, Mary Hindman, and graduated from Springville High School in 1931.

On May 23, 1937, she married Kenneth McShane. Kenny and Gladys lived in Cedar Rapids, Springville and Marengo until the summer of 1947, when they moved back to Springville to the house on top of McShane Hill. They resided there until 1964, when they moved to town. Gladys taught Sunday school and Bible school, helped serve too many church and funeral dinners to count, and lovingly cared for many elderly family members. Their home high on the hill was a favorite summer escape for all of their "city friends." She knew how to stretch the potato salad and fried chicken and home-baked pie or strawberry shortcake so everyone was fed. In 1963, Gladys began working for Killian's at Lindale in the garden shop and toy department, so her grandchildren enjoyed all the latest and coolest toys, and she made sure our lawn looked lush and beautiful.

Her family is grateful to Lee and the staff and many residents at Garnett Place. They were her family for the past 26 years. They also thank Dr. Mary Ann Nelson and Dr. Jolynn Glanzer and their staff for their loving care of Gladys. Thank you also to the Mercy Medical Center third floor staff for the compassionate care given to Gladys.

In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials are requested to Springville Presbyterian Church, PO Box 18, Springville, IA 52336.

Please share a memory of Gladys at www.murdoch funeralhome.com under obituaries.
